Extra Information!!

As soon as glucose enters into the cytoplasm, it breaks down into a 3 - carbon molecule called pyruvate. This pyruvate on reaching the mitochondria performs cellular respiration to produce energy. This happens in the case of aerobic respiration.

There is another form of respiration known as anaerobic respiration.

Anaerobic respiration can be classified into two groups:-

  • Anaerobic respiration in yeast (fragmentation)
  • Anaerobic respiration in muscle cells (lack of oxygen)

Anaerobic respiration in yeast:-

Here the pyruvate does not break down completely as a result of which ethanol is formed and carbon dioxide is released.

Anaerobic respiration in muscle cells (lack of oxygen):-

When we do a heavy workout the amount of oxygen requirement increases in our muscle cells but the amount that is transported is not sufficient for aerobic respiration to perform and thus the muscle cells start respirating in the lack of oxygen which leads to the formation of lactic acid in our muscles. Here too the pyruvate does not break down completely.
