molecular orbital is different from atomic orbital by following means -

  • Atomic orbitals are formed by the electrons present around the atom . while molecular atoms are formed by the fusion of atomic orbitals having nearly same energy.

  • Atomic orbital is the region where finding the probability of electron in an atom is high , while for molecular orbital finding the probability of electron in a molecule is high.

Electronic configuration of -

1) H2 - σ1s²

  • Bond order - 1 , diamagnetic as no unpaired electron.

2)Li2- σ1s²σ∗1s²σ2s²

  • Bond order- 1 ,diamagnetic as no unpaired electron.

3)B2 - σ1s²σ∗1s²σ2s²σ∗2s²σ2px¹=σ2py¹

  • Bond order- 1,paramagnetic as have 2 unpaired electron.

4)C2 - σ1s²σ∗1s²σ2s²σ∗2s²σ2px²=σ2py² .

  • Bond order- 2 ,diamagnetic as no unpaired electron.
