Given:

The mean of 10 observations is 20 and the median is 15. 5 is added to each observation.

To Find:

The new mean and Median is.

Solution:

1. Let the 10 observations be x1, x2, x3, x4, x5, x6, x7, x8, x9, x10.

2. The average of the 10 terms is 20.

=> (x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + x5 + x6 + x7 + x8 + x9 + x10)/10 = 20,

3. The median of the 10 observations is 15.

=> Median = (x5 + x6)/2,

=> (x5 + x6)/2 = 15.

4. Since 5 is added to each term the new mean will be,

=> Mean = (x1 + 5 + x2 + 5 + x3 + 5 + x4 + 5 + x5 + 5 + x6 + 5 + x7 +5 + x8 + 5 + x9 + 5 + x10 + 5)/10, ( Simplying further ),

=> Mean = (x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + x5 + x6 + x7 + x8 + x9 + x10)/10 + (50/10),

=> Mean = 20 + 5,

=> New Mean = 25.

5. New Median will be,

=> Median = ( x5 + 5 + x6 + 5 )/2,

=> Median = (x5 + x6)/2 + 10/2,

=> Median = 15 + 5 = 20.

Hence the new mean and median are 25 and 20. Option A is the correct answer.
