Compound A: Ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) or (C2H4O2)
CH3COOH+Na giving CH3COONa+H2
Compound B: Sodium acetate (CH3COONa)
Compound C:Ethanol (CH3CH2OH)
CH3COOH+CH3CH2OH in the presence of an acid catalyst gives CH3COOCH2CH3+H2O
Compound D:Ester (CH3COOCH2CH3) or (C4H8O2)

NaOH+CH3COOCH2CH3 gives CH3COONa+CH3CH2OH
On treating sodium hydroxide which is an alkali the ester will be converted back to ethanol and sodium salt of carbonyl ice acid.(Saponification reaction)

Answer:

A compound A (C2H4O2) reacts with Na metal to form a compound ‘B’ and evolves a gas which burns with a pop sound. This compound A is ethanoic acid and the gas produced is hydrogen.

Compound ‘A’ on treatment with an alcohol ‘C’ in presence of an acid forms a Sweet smelling compound ‘D’ (C4H8O2). This compound D is an ester, Ethyl ethanoate (CH3COOCH2CH3)

On addition of NaOH to ‘D’ gives back B and C.

A- Ethanoic acid.

B- potassium ethanoate

C- ethanol

D- ethylethanoate.
