The reaction is called as "Hydrogenation of vegetable oils". Addition of hydrogen to vegetable oil in presence of nickel reduces or removes the double bonds present in the oil. Nickel serves as catalyst in the reaction. ... The process is used to make vanaspati ghee (saturated fats) from vegetable oils (unsaturated fats).

a)carbon forms covalent bond becoz it is tetravalent that is it has 4 valence electrons and has to share.

b) it leads to hydrogenation and forms saturated compound like ghee

c) CH2 - CH2 + H2 = CH3 -CH3

vegetable oil is unsaturated and do not contain many fats and is good for health while vegetable ghee is unsaturated and contains many fats..

Nickel plays the role of catalyst here....
