32. An incomplete frequency distribution is given below:
Height 5.1-6.0 6.1-7.0 7.1-8.0 8.1-9.0 9.1–10.0 10.1–11.0 11.1-12.0
(inches)
No. of Plants 3 8 27 ? 17 119
It is known that the median height of the plant is 8.53 inches. Calculate the
missing frequency

Answer:

X = 25

Step-by-step explanation:

5.1  -  6.0     3      3

6.1  -  7.0     8       11

7.1  -  8.0     27      38

8.1  -  9.0    X       38+X

9.1 -  10.0   17       55+X

10.1  - 11.0   11       66+X

11.1   - 12.0   9      75+X

Median = 8.53   lies between 8.1  -  9.0

Median Group = 8.1  -  9.0

Median Formula = L + ((n/2 - B) /G) *W

L is the lower class boundary of the group containing the median = 8.05

n is the total number of values = 75+X

B is the cumulative frequency of the groups before the median group = 38

G is the frequency of the median group   = X

w is the group width = 1

8.53 = 8.05  + (((75 +X)/2  - 38)/X  ) * 1

=> 0.48X = X/2 - 1/2

=> 0.02X = 1/2

=> X = 25
