Q-A started on my bicycle at 7 a.m. to reach a certain place. After going a certain distance his bicycle went out of order. Consequently, A rested for 35 minutes and came back to his house walking all the way A reached my house at 1 p.m. If his cycling speed is 10 kmph and his walking speed is 1 kmph, then on his bicycle A covered a distance of :

(a) 4\frac{61}{66} km

(b) 13\frac{4}{9} km

(c) 14\frac{3}{8} km

(d) 15\frac{10}{21} km

A- Option(a) is the correct answer.

Given,

He started his journey at 7 a.m.

His journey was completed at 1 p.m.

Cycling speed = 10kmph

Walking speed = 1kmph

Rest time = 35 minutes

To Find,

The distance covered on the bicycle =?

Solution,

Let the time taken riding a bicycle be t

Total distance traveled on bicycle = Speed * Time = 10 * t

Total time taken in journey = 6 hours

Time taken for resting = 35 minutes = (35 / 60) hours

Total time taken = Time taken for resting, walking and riding bicycle

6 = (35/60) + Time taken for walking + t

Time taken for walking = [6 - (35/60) - t]

Time taken for walking = [(360 - 35)/60) - t]

Time taken for walking = [(325 / 60) - t] hours

Distance traveled by walking = Speed * Time = 1 *  [(325 / 60) - t]

Distance traveled by walking =  [(325 / 60) - t] km

Now, distance covered on bicycle = distance covered by walking

10t =  [(325 / 60) - t]

10t + t = 325 / 60

11t = 325 / 60

t = 325 / 660

Total distance traveled on bicycle = 10*t = 10*(325/660)

Total distance traveled on bicycle = 325 / 66

Total distance traveled on bicycle = 4\frac{61}{66} km

Hence, the distance covered on the bicycle is 4\frac{61}{66} km.
