CONCEPT: Trigonometry is derived from the Greek word trigon and metron means measuring the sides of a triangle.

GIVEN: AB = Height of light house

BD = Distance of second ship from light house

BC = Distance of first ship from light house

45° = Angle of depression of first ship

30°= Angle of depression of second ship

FIND: CD = Distance between two ships

SOLUTION: In ∆ABC

 \tan(45)  =  \frac{ab}{bc}

ab = bc

In ∆ABD

 \tan(30)  =  \frac{ab}{bd}

 \frac{1}{ \sqrt{3} }  =  \frac{ab}{bc + cd}

bc + cd =  \sqrt{3} ab

cd = ( \sqrt{3}  - 1)ab

cd = (1.73 - 1)75

cd = 54.75

Hence the distance between the two ships is 54.75cm.
