Answer:

Rock soil is not a distinct layer in the soil profile.

Explanation:

The soil is the earth's crust's topmost layer, primarily made of organic materials and rock particles that support life. A soil profile is a vertical cross-section of the soil that is made up of layers that run parallel to the surface. These strata are referred to as soil horizons.

The soil profile is formed of a sequence of horizons or layers of soil layered one on top of the other. The letters O, A, C, and B, symbolize these strata or horizons.

  • The O-Horizon

The O horizon is the topsoil's upper layer, and it is mostly made up of organic debris including dried leaves, grasses, dead leaves, small rocks, twigs, surface creatures, fallen trees, and other degraded organic matter. This horizon of soil is frequently black brown or dark brown in colour, owing to the presence of organic matter.

  • Topsoil or the A-Horizon

This layer, known as the humus layer, is rich in organic material. This layer is made up of both biological substances and degraded components. The topsoil is soft and porous, allowing adequate air and water to pass through.

This layer is responsible for seed germination and the formation of new roots, which eventually grow into a new plant. This layer is made up of microorganisms such as earthworms, fungi, bacteria, and so on.

  • The Subsoil or B-Horizon

The subsurface horizon can be located directly beneath the topsoil and above the bedrock. It is much tougher and more compact than topsoil. It has less humus, soluble minerals, and organic materials. It is a place of mineral and metal salt deposition, such as iron oxide.

Because of the presence of clay soil, this layer stores more water than the topsoil and is lighter brown. While ploughing the fields, the dirt from horizons A and B is frequently combined.

  • The Saprolite or C-Horizon

This stratum is made mainly of shattered bedrock and is devoid of organic stuff. This layer is also referred to as saprolite. This zone's geological substance has solidified.
