when carbon dioxide is pass through lime water in less proportion then insoluble white precipitate (calcium carbonate) is formed.

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 = CaCO3 + H2O

CaCO3 is insoluble in water.

Case 2.

when carbon dioxide is pass through lime water in excess proportion then soluble calcium hydrogen carbonate is formed.

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 = CaHCO3 + H2O
