There are 7 periods and 18 groups in the Modern Periodic Table.
On moving down in a group , the atomic radius substantially increases and as a result the ionization enthalpy decreases down the group.
This leads to an increased metallic character as the low I.E enables the elements to lose their outermost electrons easily.
On moving left to right in a period, the effective nuclear charge on the atom increases. As a result the electrons are pulled closer to the nucleus, resulting in high IE . So due to the increased force of attraction, the atomic radius tends to decrease along the group.
