Answer:

NO2 is a reddish brown gas. Since copper (E°=+0.34v)is less reactive and comes below Hydrogen in electro chemical series, cannot displace hydrogen. Nitric acid being an oxidizing agent, oxidises Cu to Cut+2 and itself gets reduced from NO3- to NO2.

Gas produced on reaction of Cu and cold  HNO_3 gives  N_20.

Explanation:

  • In the reaction between the copper and the nitric acid, copper being less reactive.
  • As it comes under the hydrogen in the Electrochemical series so it can-not displace the Hydrogen.
  • So, it acts as an oxidizing agent.
  • The copper gets 'oxidized' to produce 'copper nitrate' with nitrogen dioxide as one product.
  • Both 'nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide' are  potentially toxic at high levels.

         4 HNO3(l) + Cu(s) \rightarrow Cu(NO3)2 + 2 NO2(g) + 2 H2O(l).
