Answer: The Montreal Protocol is not related to the climate change.

To understand this, we need to know about climate change and the various steps taken to mitigate it.

What is Climate Change ?

  • It refers to the long-term fluctuations in the temperatures and weather patterns around the world
  • It may be natural or anthropogenic

UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change):

  • It came into force on 21st March, 1994
  • Its main objective is to stabilise the concentrations of the greenhouse gases at a level that can prevent dangerous anthropogenic interferences with the climatic conditions

IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change):

  • It was establised in 2014
  • An exclusive body jointly established by the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organisation to prepare scientific analysis on the various aspects of climate change

Kyoto Protocol :

  • It came into force on 16th February, 2005
  • Its main goal is to implement the objectives of UNFCCC to reduce the outbreak of global warming across the globe by reducing the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere

Montreal Protocol :

  • It came into force on 1st January, 1989
  • Its main objective is to protect the ozone layer of the stratosphere by suppressing the production of those harmful substances that are responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer

Thus, we can conclude that out of the given four options, the 4th option i.e. MONTREAL PROTOCOL, is not related to the climate change as it is associated with the production of ozone layer.
