The HCF is c, so dividing (1) by c we get

3c^2–10c+9 =0 … (2)

The two roots of (2) are

c1 =[10+(100–108)^0.5]/6 = [10+(–8)^0.5]/6 =[10+2*(–2)^0.5]/6 or [5+(–2)^0.5]/3 and

c2 = [10-(100–108)^0.5]/6 = [10-(–8)^0.5]/6 =[10-2*(–2)^0.5]/6 or [5-(–2)^0.5]/3

Hence the value of c = [5+(–2)^0.5]/3 and [5-(–2)^0.5]/3.
