National Council of Education was set up in 1906. Nationalists regarded the existing system of education as inadequate. Satish Chandra Mukherjee the editor of the Dawn created a scheme of National Education. 25 secondary and 300 primary national schools were established in Bengal in 1908 which imparted literary, technical and physical education. A National College with Aurobindo Ghose as Principal was opened in Kolkata.
