Hello !!

For you answer this question, you only need make use of this method below. See the resolution.

3x - 40 = (1/2)x + 35

3x - (1/2)x = 35 + 40

3x - (1/2)x = 75

(5/2)x = 75

x = 75/(5/2)

x = (75/1) × (2/5)

x = 150/5

x = 30

Final result : 30 is the solution for (x).

I hope I have collaborated !

3x - 40 =  \frac{1}{2} x + 35 \\  \\  3x - 40 =  \frac{x}{2}  + 35 \\  \\ 3x - 40 =  \frac{x}{2}  +  \frac{35}{1}  \\  \\ 3x - 40 =  \frac{x + 70}{2}  \\  \\ 2(3x - 40) = x + 70 \\  \\ 6x - 80 = x + 70 \\  \\ 6x - x = 70 + 80 \\  \\ 5x = 150 \\  \\ x =  \frac{150}{5}  \\  \\ x = 30
