from equation (2) we get,

2x + y = 1

y = 1 - 2x ........ (3)

put y = 1 - 2x in equation (1) we get,

3x - 4 ( 1 - 2x ) = 18

3x - 4 + 8x = 18

11x = 22

x = 2

put x = 2 in equation (3) we get,

y = 1 - 2*2

y = 1 - 4

y = -3
