3x-5y=16......(1). x-3y=8 ...(2)

3x=16+5y

x =  \frac{16 + 5y}{3}  \:  \:  \:  \: .........(3)

putting the value of x in eq (2)

 \frac{16 + 5y}{3}  - 3y = 8

16 + 5y - 9y = 24

16  - 4y = 24

 - 4y = 24 - 16

 - 4y = 8

y =  \frac{8}{ - 4}

y =  - 2

putting the value of y in eqn (3)

x =  \frac{16 - 5( - 2)}{3}

x =  \frac{16 + 10}{3}

x =  \frac{26}{3}

x = 8.66666
