Answer:

The value of x is 2 and y is -2.

I solved using the substitution method.

Step-by-step explanation:

3x - 5y = 16

=> 3x = 16 + 5y

=> x = ( 16 + 5y ) / 3 ---- (i)

Now, substituting the value of x from equation (i) in the second equation, we get :-

x - 3y = 8

=> ( 16 + 5y )/3 - 3y = 8

=> ( 16 + 5y - 9y )/3 = 8

=> 16 - 4y = 24

=> -4y = 24 - 16

=> -4y = 8

=> y = -2 --- (ii)

Now, substituting the value of y from equation (ii) in equation (i), we get :-

x = ( 16 + 5y )/3

=> x = ( 16 + 5*(-2) )/3

=> x = ( 16 - 10 )/3

=> x = 6/3

=> x = 2
