In above case there is a simple trick as the coefficient of y is 1 simply add the equation

3x - y = 5

+ x + y = 11

4x + 0 = 16

After equating we get

4x=16

x = 16/4

x = 4

If we put the value of x in equation we get the value of y as

4 + y = 11

y = 11-4

y = 7
