Answer:

 x = 3    and    y = -2

Step-by-step explanation:

3x+y=7----->1                       x+y=1------>2

subtract eqn 1 and 2

        3x+y=7

          x+y=1

         (-)  (-)  (-)

    => 2x=6

           x=3

put x=3 in eqn 2

      x+y=1

      3+y=1

      y= 1-3

      y= -2

   x= 3, y= -2

Given:

  • 3x + y = 7 ⟶ [Equation 1]
  • x + y = 1 ⟶ [Equation 2]

To find:

Value of x, y

Solution:

According to elemination method, perform mathematical operations such that 1 variable can be eliminated.

Here, when we subtract Equation 2 from Equation 1, we can easily eliminate y

So, (Equation 1) - (Equation 2)

3x + y = 7

{-} x + y = 1

2x = 6

➝ x = 6 ÷ 2 = 3

For finding the value of y, substitute the value of x in Equation 2

x + y = 1

⇒ 3 + y = 1

⇒ y = 1 - 3

⇒ y = -2

Therefore

  • x = 3
  • y = -2
