Answer:

Factoring 3x2-9x-16

The first term is, 3x2 its coefficient is 3 .

The middle term is, -9x its coefficient is -9 .

The last term, "the constant", is -16

Step-1 : Multiply the coefficient of the first term by the constant 3 • -16 = -48

Step-2 : Find two factors of -48 whose sum equals the coefficient of the middle term, which is -9 .

-48 + 1 = -47

-24 + 2 = -22

-16 + 3 = -13

-12 + 4 = -8

-8 + 6 = -2

-6 + 8 = 2

-4 + 12 = 8

-3 + 16 = 13

-2 + 24 = 22

-1 + 48 = 47

Observation : No two such factors can be found !!

Conclusion : Trinomial can not be factored
