3y - 2x = 21 ______( 1 )

4y + 5x = 5 _______( 2 )

Multiply ( 1 ) by 4.

4 ( 3y - 2x ) = 4 ( 21 )

12y - 8x = 84 ______( 3 )

Multiply ( 2 ) by 3.

3 ( 4y + 5x ) = 3 ( 5 )

12y + 15x = 15 _______( 4 )

Subtract ( 3 ) and ( 4 )

( 12y - 8x ) - ( 12y + 15x ) = 84 - 15

12y - 8x - 12y - 15x = 84 - 15

\cancel{12y} - 8x - \cancel{12y} - 15x = 84 - 15

- 23x = 69

- x = \dfrac{69}{23}

x = - 3

Put this in ( 1 )

3y - 2 ( - 3 ) = 21

3y + 6 = 21

3y = 21 - 6

3y = 15

y = \dfrac{15}{3}

y = 5

Hence, x = - 3 and y = 5.
