Step-by-step explanation:

(3y + 5)² = 16

∴ 3y² + 30y + 25 = 16

∴ 3y² + 30y + 9 = 0

dividing the entire equation by 3, we get

y² + 10y + 3 = 0

comparing with ay² + by + c = 0

a = 1, b = 10, c = 3

∴ b² - 4ac = (10)² - 4(1)(3)

                = 100 - 12

                = 88

∴ y = -b ± √b² - 4ac / 2a

     = -(10) ± √88 / 2(1)

     = -10 ± 2√22 / 2

     = 2 ( -5 ± √22) / 2

     = -5 ± √22

∴ y = -5 + √22 OR y = -5 - √22
