i) No, Ernest did not see Gathergold's resemblance to the Great Stone Mask. There was a lack of truthfulness, compassion and softness on Gathergold's face which was clearly evident on his face

ii) Within his own heart Ernest confided that the Gathergold was not the right guy he was looking for. He was proven correct because sometime later Gathergold died. He was a poor guy back then. All the people said he had no similarity to the stone face, then.
