The announcement regarding the imposition of German language in Alsace and Lorraine not only broke M. Hamel’s heart, but of all Frenchmen. The announcement meant M. Hamel had to leave the school where he had been teaching for forty years. Franz realized M. Hamel’s sadness and grief from the solemnness of the situation. M. Hamel was looking very sad and serious. He was wearing his best clothes on the last day of his teaching. He wanted to teach his students with all his heart.  

At the end of the lesson, he became so emotional that his voice choked with tears. He just signaled the class to disperse.
