Erode Venkatappa Ramasamy, better known as Thanthai Periyar (Senior), was an Indian social activist and politician who reformed the socio-political scenario of Tamil Nadu. To this day, many of his ideologies have been translated into social policy and widely studied in many communities. An example of this was the Tamil Nadu government's decision to celebrate 17 September, Periyar's birthday, as "Social Justice Day".
During his lifetime, Periyar paved the way for several revolutions and openly questioned many influential people of the time, including Mahatma Gandhi. He continues to be hailed as the "Father of the Dravidian Movement" and the visionary behind the famous "Self-Respect Movement".

He also strongly believed in the idea that the differences, hatred, enmity, degradation, poverty and wickedness prevalent in society were due to a lack of wisdom and rational thought. While many leaders associated the existing injustice with God or the cruelty of time, Periyar blamed state machinery and stratification.
He even said that the British government was better than the autocracy which propagated casteism and inequality. In support of this observation, he stated that the West was advancing scientifically and sending messages to other planets, while Tamil society continued to send rice and grains to dead ancestors through Brahmins.
