Given info : 4.4 g of CO2 and 11.2 L of O2 are mixed in a container at STP.
To find : the partial pressure of O2.
solution : given mass of CO2 = 4.4g
molecular mass of CO2 = 44g/mol
so no of moles of CO2 = 4.4/44 = 0.1
similarly, given volume of O2 = 11.2 L
so no of moles of O2 = given volume/22.4 L
= 11.2/22.4 = 0.5
so mole fraction of O2 = no of moles of O2/total moles
= 0.5/(0.5 + 0.1) = 5/6 = 0.83
now partial pressure of O2 = total pressure × mole fraction of O2
here at STP, total pressure = 1 atm
so, partial pressure of O2 = 1 × 0.83 = 0.83 atm
Therefore the partial pressure of O2 is 0.83 atm.
