I think there is a mistake in the question. The mass of the metal chloride must be higher than it's constituent's mass. Hence the actual mass would be 74.5 g

Mass of metal chloride = Mass of metal + Mass of chloride

=> 74.5 g = Mass of metal + 35.5 g

=> Mass of metal = 74.5 - 35.5 = 39 g

Equivalence mass of metal = Mass of metal / n - factor

Since the metal bonds only with one atom of chlorine, the valency is 1.

=> Equivalence mass = 39 g / 1 = 39 g

Hence solved !
