Explanation:

So let's start by understanding that when a conducting material, such as the nail is wound by a wire and supplied with electric current it starts to act as a magnet. In a single word this process is called as electromagnetism. the nail is referred to as the Electromagnet. Hence when you discontinue the supply of current to the nail it loose it electromagnetic properties and therefore stops acting like a magnet.
