the phrase 1/3rd of it is very confusing. 1/3rd of whole pole or 1/3rd of pole in mud. I am taking it as 1/3rd of whole pole

let full length of pole be x

in the mud = 4x/7

1/3rd of pole is pulled i.e. x/3

remaining in mud = 4x/7 - x/3

but remaining pole in mud in 5 m

so,

4x/7 - x/3 = 5

(12x - 7x)/21 = 5

5x/21 = 5

5x = 21*5

x = 21*5/5

x = 21 m
