Answer:

In the Indian numbering system, we use different periods like ones, thousands, lakhs, crores, etc. Suppose, let us understand the Indian system by using number 1: ones (1), tens (10), hundreds (100), thousands (1000), ten thousands (10000), lakhs (1,00,000), ten lakhs (10,00,000), crores (1,00,00,000), ten crores (10,00,00,000) etc.

We form different periods like ones, thousands, lakhs and crores to read the large numbers easily. A comma (,) is used to differentiate the periods.

Some examples will help us to write the Indian numbering system in figures and in words.

1. Write the following in figures in the Indian system:

(i) Five thousand

(ii) Fifty thousand

(iii) Five lakh

(iv) Fifty lakh

(v) Five crore

(vi) Fifty crore

Solution:

(i) 5,000

(ii) 50,000

(iii) 5,00,000

(iv) 50,00,000

(v) 5,00,00,000

(vi) 50,00,00,000

Note:

• The first period, called ones period, is formed with the first three digits of the number.

• The second period, called thousands period, is formed with the next two digits of the number.

• The third period, called lakhs period, is formed with the next two digits of the number.

• The fourth period, called crores period, is formed with the digits that come after lakhs.

2. Write the following in figures in the Indian system:

(i) One thousand, three hundred and twenty-four

(ii) Fifty thousand, four hundred and eleven

(iii) Two lakh, twelve thousand, six hundred and thirty-one

(iv) Sixty-two lakh, five thousand, eight hundred and three

(v) Eight crore, fifteen lakh, seventeen thousand, eight hundred and fifteen

Solution:

(i) 1324

(ii) 50,411

(iii) 2,12,631

(iv) 62,05,803

(v) 8,15,17,815

Note:

We have to put a comma (,) properly after each period to differentiate the periods.
