4. A building 15 m high casts a shadow 1.8 m long. What would the height of a pole
be, if at the same time its shadow is 60 cm?

Let heights of building be  x .

Let length of shadow be y .

Length of building = 15 m = 1500 cm

Shadow of building = 1.8 m = 180 cm

Length of building = x₂

Shadow of length = 60 cm

Now whenever height of the building increases , then length of the shadow will also increase .

∴ x ∝ y

⇒ x₁/ y₁ = x₂/y₂

⇒ 1500 / 180 = x₂ / 60

By transposition :-

x₂ = (1500 / 180 ) × 60

x₂ = 1500 / 3 = 500 cm = 5 m

⇒ The height of the building when the shadow is 60 cm long is 5 metres .
