Answer:

Let the age of daughter be X years.

A mother is 20 years older than her daughter,

Then, the age of mother = ( X + 20) years

4 years before she was 5 times of her daughter’s age at the time,

(X + 20) – 4 = 5 (X – 4)

X + 20 – 4 = 5 X – 20

5 X – X = 16 + 20

4 X = 36

X = 36/4

X = 9

Then, the age of daughter is 9 years.

Answer:

Let the present age of daughter be x yrs

∴ The present age of mother = (20+x)yrs

Now age of daughter 4 years  before = (x-4)yrs

Age of mother 4 years  before = (20+x-4)yrs

But given=5(x-4)

∴ 20+x - 4= 5(x-4)

⇒ 16+x=5x-20

⇒5x-x=16+20

⇒4x=36

⇒x= 9

∴ The present age of the daughter is 9 yrs

And that of the mother is 29 yrs
