Given :  A total of 55 athletes participated in an athletic meet.

24 won bronze medals, 36 won silver medals and 12 won gold medals.

10 won gold and silver, 15 won silver and bronze, 8 won gold and bronze.

6 athletes won all the three medals,

To Find : how many of them won exactly two medals

Solution:

exactly two medals = n( G ∩ S) - n ( G ∩ S ∩ B)  +  n( G ∩ B) - n ( G ∩ S  ∩ B) +  n( B ∩ S) - n ( G ∩ S ∩  B)

n( G ∩ S) = 10     won gold and silver

 n( G ∩ B) = 8  won gold and bronze.

n( B ∩ S)  = 15 won silver and bronze,

n ( G ∩ S ∩ B)  = 6 won all the three medals,

= 10 - 6 + 8 - 6 + 15 - 6

= 15

15 won exactly two medals
