Here we are given some sentences and we have to add question tags to this. So let's do it

⠀⠀(α) Mishα is very quick, isn't she?

⠀⠀(b) He hαs seen it, hαsn't he?

⠀⠀(c) He is our English teαcher, isn't he?

⠀⠀(d) Arun told α lie, didn't he?

⠀⠀(e) He lives in α village, doesn't he?

Explαnαtíon

The sentences are positive so the question tags will be negative and we will use the first auxiliary verbs in the statement in the tag and invert the auxiliary and the subject.

Question tags are short additions to sentences, to ask for confirmation of something we are not sure about, or to ask for agreement. Question tags are not full questions. They cannot stand by themselves like other questions. The use of question tags is colloquial.

To make a question tag we use Anomalous Finite and there are 24 anomalous finite or anomalous finite + not 's contracted forms.

do + not = don't ,does + not = doesn't ,did + not = didn't ,is + not = isn't ,are + not = aren't, has + not = hasn't ,Am I not ....? = Aren't I..? etc.

Pattern of question tags:

  1. Anomalous Finite + Subject?
  2. Anomalous Finite + n't + subject?

Note : There is no use of lexical verb to make question tags. e.g., go, eat, laugh etc.

Points to remember while making question tags :

  • If the sentence is positive, the question tag will be negative and if the sentence is negative question tag will be positive.
  • If there is no auxiliary, use do.

Note : It is not necessary that negative statement means the use of negative verb. There are many sentences in which positive verb will use but negative subject/object/complement/adverb used in a negative manner. In this sentences we will use positive tags.

Example —

  • A barking dog seldom bites, does he?
  • Neither of them helped you, did they?

But 'a few' and 'a little' which are positive expressions will take negative question tag. e.g.,

  • They have a little money, haven't they?
  • Only a few students will get the awards, won't they?
