4. Answer the following questions in about 90-100 words: (8 marks) a) Read the paragraph and answer the question given below. The Sri Lankan government adopted some measures to establish Sinhala Supremacy in 1956. An Act was passed to recognise Sinhala as the only official language, thus disregarding the Tamil language. The government followed preferential policies favouring Sinhala applicants for government jobs, and the constitution provided state protection to the Buddhists. The Sri Lankan Tamils felt that none of the major political parties led by the Buddhist Sinhala leaders were sensitive towards their language and culture and denied them equal political rights, which eventually led to a revolt by the Tamils.


Write two similarities and two differences between the situation in Sri Lanka and the Revolt of 1857.
