Let the radius of each circle be 'r',

All circles are circumscribed by a square,

Area of square,

= s^2

= (4r)^2

= 16r^2

Now area of each circle,

= \pi r^2

So, the area of 4 circles

= 4 \pi r^2

Remaining area,

= 16r^2 - 4 \pi r^2

= 4r^2(4 - \pi)

It's given that radius of each circle is 1 cm,

Now sub,

= 4(1)^2 (4 - \pi)

= 16 - 4 \pi
