4. Describe an experiment to obtain the constituents of the following mixtures :
a. A mixture of sand, saw dust and common salt
b. A mixture of iron-filings, ammonium chloride and sand.​

Sand, saw dust and common salt can be separated by adding water to the mixture. Stir the mixture well with water and allow it to stand for some time. Sand settles at the bottom of the beaker, saw dust floats on water and common slat dissolves in water. Saw dust can be separated form the top the mixture. Filtering the mixture will leave sand as residue, the filterate will contain salt water, which can be evaporated to obtain common salt.

(2). Mixture of Iron fillings, ammonium chloride and sand can be separated by moving a magnet over the mixture which will attract iron fillings leaving behind ammonium chloride and sand. They can be separated by heating the mixture in a china dish with an inverted funnel placed over it. Ammonium chloride sublimes and gets deposited on the walls of the funnel, leaving behind sand in the china dish.
