(1) The reaction of oxygen with a metal involves the formation of an ionic compound by complete transfer of one or more electrons to the the former from the latter.
(2)On the other hand, the reaction of oxygen with a nonmetal always involves the formation of a covalent compound by mutual sharing of electrons.
(3) Metal oxides are mostly basic compounds but the oxides of some metals like aluminium, zinc, tin and lead have amphoteric characteristics (e.g. Al2O3, ZnO, SnO, PbO).
(4) Most nonmetal oxides are acidic in nature though some nonmetals like hydrogen, carbon and nitrogen are known to form neutral oxides also (e.g. H2O, CO, NO).
