A train travels a certain distance at the same speed. If the speed of the vehicle is 6 kph. I / Hr, she arrives 4 hours earlier than her scheduled time. If  the speed of the train was reduced to 6 km / hr, then the train would be 6 hours faster than its scheduled time  It will take more. So how many km did the train travel in total?  

  • Consider time taken as t, speed as x and Distance as d.
  • Time = Distance / Speed  
  • So Speed = Distance / Time
  •        x = d/t ----------1
  • Now for the first case we have
  •      d = (x + 6) (t – 4)
  •      d = xt + 6t – 4x – 24
  •     d = d – 4x + 6t – 24
  •     6t – 4x = 24 ------------2
  • Now for the second case we have
  •     d = (x – 6) (t + 6)
  •     d = xt + 6x – 6t – 36
  •  d = d + 6x – 6t – 36
  •     6x – 6t = 36 ----------------3
  • Adding equation 2 and 3 we get
  •     6t – 4x = 24
  •    -6t + 6x = 36
  •           2x = 60
  •            x = 30
  • Now substituting the value of x in eqn 2 we get
  •   6t – 4(30) = 24
  •   6t – 120 = 24
  •   6t = 24 + 120
  •   6t = 144
  •     t = 144 / 6
  •     t = 24 hours
  • Now substituting the value of t and x in equation 1 we get
  •     Distance d = x t
  •                       = 30 x 24
  •        Or d = 720 kms
  • Therefore the train travelled a distance of 720 kms
