1-lakes and rivers don't freeze because water, ice,snow are good insulators and poor conductors of heat . THE portion of a lake or river that are exposed to the cold winter air will freeze into ice and thus ice insulates the water below from further rapid freezing.

4-water is called "universal solvent "because it is capable of dissolving more substance than any other liquid. This is important to every living thing on earth. it means wherever water goes,either through the air, the grounds, or through our bodies, it takes along valuable chemicals, minerals,and nutrients.
