Reaction of Sodium with water:-

  • Sodium metal reacts rapidly with water to form a colourless solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen gas (H2). Equation is as follows:-
  • 2 Na ( s ) + 2 H2O ( l ) 2 NaOH ( aq ) + H2 ( g )

Reaction of Magnesium with water:-

  • Magnesium burns in steam to produce white magnesium oxide and hydrogen gas. Very clean magnesium ribbon has a very slight reaction with cold water. After several minutes, some bubbles of hydrogen form on its surface, and the coil of magnesium ribbon usually floats to the surface . Equation for reaction is:-
  • Mg + H2O = MgO + H2

Reaction of Iron with Water:-

  • iron metal reacts in moist air by oxidation to give a hydrated iron oxide. This does not protect the iron surface to further reaction since it flakes off, exposing more iron metal to oxidation. Equation for reaction is:-
  • 3Fe + H2O = Fe3O4 + 4H2(g)
