when any atom(parent atom) loses a electron from the outermost shell...then when if the electron is removed ,,thus the valence shell is also removed....
this is only and only reason why cation is always smaller than the size of the parent atom..
and whereas on the other hand...anions...
when they gain electrons they tend to complete their outermost shell so when it takes (gains) any electron it added to the same shell and thus nuclear pull decreases...that's y anions are larger in radii than the parent atom..
