Step-by-step explanation:

let father's age be x

and sons age be y

father is 40 years elder than his son

= x=y+40 --- 1

after 10 years father will be twice as old as son

= x+10=2(y+10)

= x+10=2y+20

= x-2y=20-10

= x-2y=10 [from 1]

= y+40-2y=10

= -y+40=10

= -y=10-40

= -y= -30

So y=30

So x=y+40

= x=30+40

= x=70

so that present age of son is 30 years

and the present age of father is 40 years

Step-by-step explanation:

let the son's age be ''x''

Fathers age = x + 40

After 10 years

Son's age = (x + 10)

Fathers age = (x + 40 + 10)

(x + 10) (2) = x + 10 + 40

2x + 20 = x + 50

2x  - x = 50 - 20

x = 30 (son's age)

x + 40 = 30 + 40 = 70 years (father's age)
