Deposits of aluminium

By States, Odisha alone accounts for 51% of country's resources of bauxite followed by Andhra Pradesh (16%), Gujarat (9%), Jharkhand (6%), Maharashtra (5%) and Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh (4% each). Major bauxite resources are concentrated in the East Coast bauxite deposits in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh (Table-1).

Deposits of zinc

Zinc ore occurs in two types of deposit: as primary zinc ore in thin veins known as rakes, or a secondary deposit formed by weathering of the primary mineral veins. Zinc ore is most commonly found as zinc carbonate (ZnCO3), known as calamine or smithsonite.

Deposits of iron

major economic deposits of iron ore are found associated with volcano- sedimentary Banded Iron Formation (BIF) of Pre-Cambrian Age. The major "hematite" type iron deposits are located in well defined belts in the States of Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka

Haematite and magnetite are the most important iron ores in India. About 79% haematite ore deposits are found in the Eastern Sector (Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha & Uttar Pradesh) while about 93% magnetite ore deposits occur in Southern Sector (Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, & Tamil Nadu)

DEPOSIT OF ZINC

Rajasthan is endowed with the largest resources of lead-zinc ore amounting to 607.53 million tonnes (88.61%), followed by Andhra Pradesh 22.69 million tonnes (3.31%), Madhya Pradesh 14.84 million tonnes (2.16%), Bihar 11.43 million tonnes (1.67%) and Maharashtra 9.27 million tonnes (1.35).

DEPOSITE OF ALUMINIUM

There are 8 aluminium smelting plants in the country located in Odisha (formerly Orissa) (Nalco and Balco), West Bengal, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
