SO2 + H2O = H2SO3

when metallic oxide reacts with water it produces metal oxides that are basic in nature.

Na2O + H2O = 2NaOH

you can check the nature by using a litmus paper . In case of sulferous acid , the blue litmus turns red indicating that it is acidic.
