Given

4 gram of metal oxide gets converted into 10 gram carbonate.

To find

Equivalent weight of the metal.

Equivalent weight

Equivalent weight of a substance is defined as the weight of the substance that either reacts or form 1 gm H2, 35.5 gm Cl2 or 22 gram CO2 or 8 gram 02.

SOLUTION

Let the metal ion be  {M}^{x + } .

Now, the reaction can be represented as

 M_{2}O_{x} + CO_{2} = M_{2}(CO_{3}) _{x}

Given, 4 gram metal oxide forms 10 gram carbonate.

Hence, weight of CO2 = Weight of metal carbonate - weight of metal oxide = 10 - 4 = 6 gram.

Hence, 6 gram CO2 reacts with 4 gram metal oxide.

=> 1 gram CO2 reacts with 4/6 gram metal oxide.

=> 22 gram CO2 reacts with 88/6 gram metal oxide.

Hence, equivalent weight of metal oxide = 88/6 gram = 14.67 gram

Now, equivalent Weight of oxygen = 8 gram.

Therefore, equivalent weight of metal = equivalent weight of metal oxide - equivalent weight of oxygen = 14.67 - 8 = 6.67 gram.

Hence,Equivalent weight of the metal is 6.67 gram.
