More Information:-

When we refer to the exact words as said by the speaker in a sentence, it is said to be in direct speech.

- The teacher said, 'Maintain Silence!'

When we report of what somebody said or thought in our own words, we use indirect speech

- The teacher asked them to maintain silence.

Changing direct speech to indirect speech:-

  • Remove the punctuations, especially the inverted commas ('...')
  • Use reporting verbs such as said, told, thought followed by that.
  • Change the tense of the verb to past tense.

If the sentence is an Interrogative Sentence, the reporting verbs should be asked, enquired, demanded.
