Resonance causes a vibrating string to produce a sound with constant frequency, i.e. constant pitch. If the length or tension of the string is correctly adjusted, the sound produced is a musical tone.

The pitch of the note depends upon the length of the tube. A shorter tube produces a higher note, and so holes are covered. Blowing harder makes a louder sound. To produce deep notes woodwind instruments, have to be quite long and therefore the tube is curved.
